Turn ghost mannequin photos into real model photos

The ghost mannequin (or invisible-mannequin) effect earned its place in e-commerce for a reason: it shows a garment's three-dimensional shape cleanly, without a model's styling distracting from the product. If your catalog is already shot this way, that work isn't wasted — but it answers only half of what a clothing buyer is asking.

The other half is fit. A hollow torso can't show where a hem lands on a real body, how a sleeve sits at the wrist, how fabric drapes over shoulders and hips, or what the piece looks like as an outfit. Shoppers scrolling a results page click the photo that lets them imagine wearing the item — which is why fashion marketplaces are dominated by on-model imagery.

Then there's the compliance problem. Amazon US requires the MAIN image for adult apparel to show the product on a standing human model. Mannequin shots — visible or invisible — are not eligible as the main image for adult clothing, and neither are flat-lays or hanger shots. If your entire catalog is ghost mannequin photography, every adult-apparel listing needs an on-model conversion before it can lead with a compliant main image. The traditional fix is a reshoot: book a studio, hire a model, ship samples, wait for edits. A ghost-mannequin photo has already had the mannequin edited out, leaving the hollow "invisible model" shape. Inner-collar and back-neck composites — the joins your retoucher built for the ghost effect — are read as garment construction and preserved.

One nuance worth knowing: ghost mannequin photos are usually shot on a rigid form that holds the garment stiffer than a body would. The on-model result relaxes that — fabric falls with natural gravity at the shoulders and hem, which is precisely the fit information the ghost shot couldn't show. Flat-lays and hanger shots also work as inputs, though a ghost or mannequin shot gives the AI the strongest shape signal.
